LOSC Dominates at BC Championships

April 2, 2024

The Swim BC Provincial Championships took place this past weekend from March 7-10 at the Saanich Commonwealth Place on Vancouver Island. As the name suggests, this competition is the largest in the province, bringing together over 600 swimmers from 38 teams. LOSC brought a team of 78 swimmers, massively taking the team score lead after every evening of racing. At the end of finals on Sunday, LOSC took home the team championship banner with a combined score of 3558.5, which was over 1000 points ahead of 2nd Place!

Altogether, the team won a staggering 96 medals (42 Gold, 26 Silver and 28 Bronze). In addition, Leila Fack and Justin Jung earned the 17&Over Aggregate Awards.

Head Coach Ryan Skomorowski commends the intense weekend of racing for the club, with many swimmers competing in over 20 races at a very high level. He says it was fantastic to win our 3rd Provincial Championship title in a row, which shows the long-term commitment to excellence from both the swimmers and the coaches. Ryan would like to extend a special thank you for the support of all our aquatic facilities, as without access to these facilities and the support of the community, we could not accomplish such a rare achievement in the Province.

Assistant Head Coach Hattie Sun gives a shout-out to the 12&Under Boys for breaking the 400m Freestyle Relay Club Record. Congratulations to Owen Yeung, Ian Cho, Timothy Ngai and Oliver MacPherson for this amazing feat. She commends all the swimmers on preparing well and having a fantastic meet!

Coach Brian Metcalfe applauds the team on its dominating performances with winning the Women’s, Men’s and Overall Team Championship title for the 2nd Winter in a row. The best times, Club Records and BC Records are evident of the dedication and racing spirit of the swimmers.

Coach Sue’s group had a massively successful meet as well, with 86% of their races accomplishing new best times and 7 new qualifying times for Western and National Championships.

BC Records were broken in the 200m Freestyle Relay (Leila Fack, Ashley Ko, Carolyne Jia and Julia Strojnowska), the 200m Medley Relay (Ashley Ko, Macey Larson, Leila Fack and Julia Strojnowska) and the 400m Freestyle Relay (Leila Fack, Julia Strojnowska, Carolyne Jia and Ashley Ko). Collyn Gagne also broke the BC record in the 400m Freestyle.

These impressive BC Records were also new LOSC Club Records along with Julia Strojnowska’s 200m and 800m Freestyle, Danny Park’s 200m Freestyle, Justin Jung’s 200m Breaststroke, Collyn Gagne’s 200m Individual Medley and 200m Freestyle, and the above mentioned Boy’s 400m Freestyle Relay.

New BC Provincial Championship Meet Records were achieved by Macey Larson in the 200m Breaststroke and the 800m Freestyle Relay (Ashley Ko, Leila Fack, Kayla Thai and Julia Strojnowska).

The swimmers that left the meet with new Western Canadian Championship Qualifying Times are Joad Wood, Jinsei Yamamoto, Maiysa Montakhab, Sammi Burwell, Finn Parr, Mackenna Petty, Lucas Fong and Kyu Cho. Furthermore, Maiysa Montakhab achieved a new Canadian Junior time, and Danny Park, Alex Velicico and Justin Jung added more events to their Canadian Trials Qualifying times.
